04 Nov Overactive Media Approved To Build Toronto Esports Arena
The future of performance venues.
Appropriately themed in a futuristic way, Overactive Media has been confirmed by the Exhibition Place Board of Governors to build a 7,000 seat venue on the lakeside of Toronto. Plans are currently set for completion sometime in 2025. Heading into 2022 means that planning will probably finish and construction will begin sooner than we think. Venue planners are currently aiming to host over 200 shows annually in the arena. With Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye being an owner of Overactive Media, it would be reasonable to expect him to be hosted in his hometown arena a few times.
Design and Architecture
According to Overactive Media and Populous, “The in-bowl design caters to traditional music acts, large scale events and the best in esports competition and entertainment.” The futuristic design, particularly the interior, is cited as being, “inclusive of distinct influences which are uniquely Toronto.” One of the unseen sections of the venue in the renderings is a privately owned public space (POPS). It will be an urban room between the venue and hotel, meant to connect the two. Firstly, it will serve as a complete connection between locations. Moreover, it will also have the ability to host additional programming activities. The addition of the POPS will turn the venue and hotel into an all-in-one event location.

New Home for Toronto Esports
Owning both the Toronto Defiant Overwatch League team and Toronto Ultra Call of Duty League team, Overactive Media has plans to move both teams into the venue upon opening. Overactive media confirmed to ESTNN that not only will the Defiant and Ultra play their home games in the venue, but will also use it as their base of operations. The venue is of course going to host events of many kinds. Although esports is planned to take up more event slots over time.
This could easily become the premier location for esports events. Not only for Toronto teams, but even championship games across different esports.
