27 Oct LoL: CLG Adds Jonathon McDaniels As New General Manager
Jonathon McDaniel will look to steady the ship after a poor 2021 season.
In what has been a terrible time for CLG over the past couple of years, it appears they are looking to change things up ahead of the 2022 season. After the departure of Daniel “Tafokints” Lee, Jonathan McDaniels will be taking over the role of Counter Logic Gaming’s League of Legends General Manager.
McDaniels is a well-respected individual and has had great success throughout his time in the LCS. So far, McDaniels is most known for his time on Cloud9. Here, he helped the LCS giants scout and develop young talent. Current Cloud9 academy head coach Jonathan “Westrice” Nguyen was quick to praise the appointment on Twitter.
Huge pickup. This man was an integral part of C9 academy’s developmental+scouting success. Can’t wait to see CLG turning it around next year. https://t.co/v0OQR69yMi

“Jonathon has had a great career in the League of Legends space, from scouting to coaching, and ultimately leading to jobs in the front office,” said Greg Kim, Head of CLG. “I’ve always admired his work and I’m excited to have him take this next step of leading CLG’s League of Legends program back to the ultimate goal of competing for championships.”
McDaniels will look to right past wrongs
Counter Logic Gaming came under heavy fire for their actions halfway through the Summer Split. During this time, Tafokints and the rest of the organization were under heavy scrutiny for publishing a private team meeting on Twitter. During this meeting, players were informed that this would likely be the last time these five players will be playing together. To make things worse, the video was even branded as a sponsored one.
The community is still down on CLG, and rightfully so. However, this appointment is a step in the right direction. It’s one that should help fill some confidence back into the hearts of CLG fans. While no decisions have been made on their currently contracted players, having a manager like McDaniels means fans should be excited about this project.
It will definitely take some time to steady the ship. But McDaniels’ experience of developing young North American talent should hopefully see CLG rise up the standings over time. Similarly to how Peter Dun, Kelsey Moser and Evil Geniuses have developed a program that sees young NA talent thrive.
