PGL is currently in talks with Swedish authorities to work together on a plan for hosting the event. As mentioned in their release, the current situation allows only about 300 spectators inside the Avicii Arena, which can accommodate a large audience. However, if the pandemic eases, the authorities might lift the restrictions after September 15.
Considering CS:GO LAN was returning after a two-year-long break because of the pandemic, Stockholm was the first choice for hosting the Major. According to PGL, Sweden’s capital was a special place with a rich Counter-Strike heritage.
PGL has mentioned their backup plans in case the organization cannot host in Stockholm. They are in touch with two other European countries who have given a green light to run the CS:GO Major.
Recently, Valve had to move Dota 2’s biggest event from Stockholm because of the pandemic. The developers had to pick Bucharest, Romania and postpone the event. PGL has a brief window to decide on a location, considering the Major is set to take place in October 2021.
