15 Jun Dota 2: How Ana’s Retirement From Competitive Dota 2 Pans Out For OG?
OG are far from the squad that challenged and won TI, but how far are they?
Anathan “ana” Pham recently announced his retirement from competitive Dota 2, leaving OG with a big hole in the roster. As stated in the post, Ana has been part of competitive Dota 2 for a long time and decided to stop playing competitively in order to explore other aspects of life.
.@anadota99 has decided to no longer compete in Dota 2.
It was truly a great honor to play with you, and have you by our side my friend.
Thank you for everything you have done for us.#DreamOG pic.twitter.com/vmmcRm74ue

It was a humble goodbye from both sides, but OG has a lot of work ahead. It was not sheer luck that brought the immense success OG are proud of. Their team chemistry and gameplay was one of the important factors, if not the most important one, which gave the team long-term success and enabled them to win Dota 2’s biggest trophy two times in a row.
The History
After the retirement of Jesse “JerAx” Vainikka and having a missing space in the carry role with Ana’s break after TI 9, OG tried and tested players in different positions. Bringing Syed Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan and Yeik “MidOne” Nai Zheng were some steps the European organization took to balance out the squad. However, none of the new combinations worked. As Ana rejoined the squad, OG had to make space for their old trump card, who carried them in The International’s stage. They did that by parting ways with MidOne who had played a significant number of matches with the team.
OG’s performances in both the DPC seasons have been far from settling to say the least. After a disappointing performance in Season 1, the team failed to compete in the Singapore Major. OG repeated a similar performance in Season 2 which did not help their team in getting into the AniMajor, a tournament that brilliantly showcased the incredible teams going into The International 10.
The Future
Although Ana has mentioned that his decision of retirement is best for both him and the team, OG will have to fill the space and make things work quickly. OG are not in the top 12 on the DPC points table and will have to go through the qualifiers to book a place in the TI 10 tournament. As of now OG have Topias Miikka “Topson” Taavitsainen, Sébastien “Ceb” Debs, Martin “Saksa” Sazdov and Johan “N0tail” Sundstein as team captain. OG clearly needs a position 1(Carry) player in the squad which is a hard position to fill especially when teams are gearing up to fight for TI.
One of the most popular choices will be SumaiL, the player they released earlier and who is currently a stand-in at Team Liquid. However, it seems highly unlikely if not impossible that SumaiL will rejoin OG. Given how the team roped in Topson before TI 8, anything is possible and there is no shortage of unrecognized talent in Dota 2. Whatever might be the case, OG needs to switch on their searchlights in effort to secure a last-ditch transfer before they head to the qualifiers.
