The first LoR World Championship is coming this fall.

Today, Riot Games revealed plans for the first-ever World Championship for Legends of Runeterra, the League of Legends-inspired card game. It will bring the best players from all around the world for an epic showdown in September. There are many chances for players to claim a spot in the event and fight for a $200k prize pool.

How to qualify

First off, competitors have to qualify for the World Championship qualifiers through Ranked Play or Seasonal Tournaments. The full breakdown for this is as follows:

• 22 from Ranked:
  • Points will be awarded based on your final rank at the end of each season
    • Points are only awarded to Master rank players
  • The top 22 players on each shard by the cutoff will earn a seat for the World Championship qualifiers
  • A player’s score is determined based on their best placement in two out of the five seasons leading up to the World Championship
• 20 from Seasonal Tournament finalists:
  • The top four players from each shard’s five Seasonal Tournaments will be guaranteed a seat in the World Championship qualifiers
  • Any duplicates will pass their seat to a qualifier based on Seasonal Tournament Points
• 22 from Seasonal Tournament Points
  • Points are granted based on performance in each Seasonal Tournament
    • One point will be awarded per game won in both the Open Rounds and Playoffs phase of the Seasonal Tournament
  • Points from all Seasonal Tournaments from Empires of the Ascended onward will be combined into a single total

Main event format

After proving themselves against the community at large, the real competition is on. 64 players from each major region, the Americas, Europe, SEA and Asia, will attend the Qualifiers for the World Championship Finals. Here, they’ll battle for the few spots available in the pinnacle of the tournament.

The Americas will have six seats for the Finals available, while Europe will have five. However, the 64 players from Asia and the 64 from SEA will compete together for a total of five spots in the Finals. So at the end of the day, there will be 16 contenders at this final stage. Once here, they’ll play in a Round Robin Group Stage, with four players per group. The top two players from each group will advance to a single-elimination bracket, eventually leading to one victor who claims the title of LoR’s first World Champion.
