Dota 2: Is Shadow Fiend A Viable Mid Laner On Patch 7.28c?

Dota 2: Is Shadow Fiend A Viable Mid Laner On Patch 7.28c?

Let’s take a look at one of the most iconic mid laners in Dota 2.

There are several mid lane heroes in Dota2 that have learned an iconic status, one of which is Shadow Fiend. If you played DotA back in the days, you probably remember that this was the go-to option for almost every player.

There are numerous legendary Shadow Fiend players, such as Bu “YaphetS” Yanjun, Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan, and Artour “Arteezy” Babaev. Needless to say, it is always a joy to watch those players in action because Shadow Fiend is one of the most interesting heroes to watch.

Although he is fun to play, the mid-laner has not been that popular during the past couple of years. He does a lot of damage at all stages of the game, but he is also really easy to kill. That’s why most pro teams don’t want to pick him that often.

Having said that, SF requires a lot of skill to play properly, which is why he remains the best heroes for 1v1.

What’s the situation now?

Shadow Fiend received numerous buffs in the last few patches. The most important one was the addition of Aghanim’s Shard. Although people didn’t expect it to be that good, players quickly learned how to use it.

Despite being a strong spell caster, Shadow Fiend is not performing that well within the Divine/Immortal bracket. One of the primary reasons for that is the fact that he is too fragile. The current meta is full of fast heroes that can easily dodge ganks and participate in team fights. Needless to say, Shadow Fiend is not either of those because he needs to get at least a few items in order to be effective.

Another thing that should be noted is that Shadow Fiend is hard to play effectively against good players. His spells can be dodged, and people who know how to play against him will try to bring him down as fast as possible.

So, should you pick him?

The answer to this question is yes and no. In some cases, SF can be a pretty good option, especially if you lane against a weak mid laner and there is no hero that can gank you from the opposite team.

Nevertheless, he is definitely not the best mid lane in the meta. Despite being flexible, he is fragile and is one of the worst buyback heroes in Dota 2. He does a lot of physical and magical damage, but there are heroes that do a better job.
