12 Jan Fortnite: TheGrefg Eclipses A World Record 2.5 Million Viewers During ICON Series Skin Reveal
TheGrefg destroyed Twitch’s live viewership record during Fortnite skin revelation.
Fortnite: Battle Royale’s ICON Series began roughly a year ago, coinciding with the release of Twitch superstar Tyler “Ninja” Blevin’s very own skin. Epic Games continued the ICON Series hand-chosen creators, including Australian personalities Lachlan “Lachlan” Power and Kathleen “Loserfruit” Belsten, and rap artist Travis Scott received in-game Fortnite cosmetics. The initial announcement back in January of 2020 teased the release of an ICON Series bundle for the famous Spanish content creator David “TheGrefg” Cánovas Martínez. A year later, Epic has finally come around to fleshing out a full set of item shop goodies for TheGrefg, which he revealed today on his social media platforms. The developers saved the best for last, as TheGrefg’s stream on his Twitch channel produced a record-breaking 2.5 million concurrent viewers.

The hype behind TheGrefg’s Fortnite skin revelation shattered expectations in every sense of the phrase. The Spanish creator watched as hundreds of thousands filled his Twitch channel before even going live, sparking a donation hype train and spamming the chat. TheGrefg went live this afternoon and watched his viewer count skyrocket. Before anyone knew what happened, TheGrefg broke his previous world record for the most concurrent Twitch viewers with 2.5 million. He recently made history during Fortnite’s “Devourer of World” live event, where he amassed 660K viewers, breaking the record previously held by Tyler “Ninja” Blevins.
Epic Games reached out to the creator, asking him to delay the reveal during this historic moment. Just before 4:45 PM in the United States’ eastern time zone, TheGrefg revealed his Fortnite ICON Series entry in front of over 2 million live watchers.

After much anticipation, TheGrefg became a permanent member of Fortnite’s extensive list of character skins. Following Ninja, Lachlan and Loserfruit, Epic worked with TheGrefg to design cosmetics that suited his persona. TheGrefg’s character skin model appears shirtless with the creator’s patented “G” logo branded on its chest. The bundle includes a controller pickaxe, emote and presumably a back bling of some sort, which could be the floating orbs pictured above. Epic Games also included a reactive version, which turns the character completely red, similar to the popular customizable superhero skin that debuted last season.

TheGrefg’s record-breaking reveal solidified him as the most famous creator currently in Fortnite. Only a handful of channels before today managed to eclipse and sustain 1 million concurrent viewers on Twitch. Esports insider Rod “Slasher” Breslau highlighted the gravity of this achievement. “Unbelievable,” he wrote on Twitter. “Grefg peaked at 2.5 Million viewers on Twitch to by FAR smash the record for the highest concurrent viewer count for a single gaming stream of all time. no one else is even close.” This record may remain intact for quite some time, or at least until TheGrefg comes along and breaks it once again. Several fellow creators and personalities, including Ninja, took to Twitter in celebration of TheGrefg’s accomplishment.
